superannuated
I was heading down the freeway yesterday when the car in the lane next to me started to veer into my lane. I made the obvious assumption that the other driver was on a call or worse, texting I sped up next to it so I could respond in the appropriate tried-and-true manner. By flipping them the bird. Then I saw it. It was a Blue Blocker wearing purple hair. The scary part was the old bat’s head was propped up against the head rest, her mouth was wide open and I swear there was drool coming out of her mouth. I’m pretty sure she was having a mini stroke but it’s difficult to diagnose from a lane over.
This brings up the age old question of who are worse drivers, teens or seniors? My bet is on seniors. When you see the invincible teen driver barrel around a corner on two wheels you become more alert and avoid their sphere of destruction. The elderly are sneaky scary because everything may look normal one minute and the next their car is plowing through a street fair or high centered on some center median. I know statistics show teens are more prone to have an accident but I believe old people are just as prone to cause an accident. The stats just don’t show the oblivious old timer who left a mushroom cloud wake of destruction on his way to the Old Town Buffet.
It only makes sense that once you hit a certain age you should have to go into the DMV every few years to be recertified for driving. So if you think 45 mph is just too fast on the highway or your glasses are so thick they can set small children on fire or if your spine has twisted so bad that you look through the small gap between the steering wheel and the dash to see out the windshield you may not be a safe driver anymore. Just a thought.
