the buying guilty

Well, it’s here.  Armageddon is upon us.  Never mind Dec. 21st, 2012.  It’s here now.  We grasped at the stitch in our chest as gas hit $4 a gallon.  We are walking away from our houses at unprecedented rates because the payments have exceeded our ability to pay.   The job market is in the toilet and we are dismayed why we can’t find a cush job doing little and making a lot.  Who is to blame for bringing this evil upon us?  Well, it’s not Bush or Greenspan or any other politician.  The group of people to blame for every bit of current financial trouble we are experiencing is……us.    Me, you and the rest of the buying public.

We all got butt hurt and started pouting when gas hit these ridiculous numbers.  All the while the giant gas companies are showing record profits.   So, what did we do?  Stop buying gas?  Take the bus?  Bike? Walk?  Nope, we kept feeding big oil and fattened them up on our hard earned dollar.  We have all heard for years how much more expensive it is in Europe so why are we surprised that it’s finally hitting these prices here?  Supply and demand 101: If the U.S. market bears $4 a gallon then that’s what the price at the pump will be.

As for the housing industry, everyone wants to blame this whole mess on the banks.  Although there were certainly some shameful lenders out there writing asinine loans we, the consumer, were the ones signing the papers.   If you didn’t know that an adjustable rate mortgage would eventually go up then you’re a moron.   If you didn’t fully read the contract you were singing for the biggest purchase of your life, you’re a fool.  If you bought a house with a huge mortgage at the height of the boom and your house is worth half what you paid then you are unlucky but the bubble burst was predicted months prior to it happening.  Everyone was so eager to take advantage of a situation they didn’t hesitate to think about what might happen.

We as consumers made this mess and we are going to be wading in this muck for years to come.  We all need to suck it up and quitourbitchin.  Think of it like gaining 20 lbs.  It may have only taken you two weeks to put that weight on but it’s gonna take one whole helluva lot longer to lose it.
