I saw two shows on BBC America yesterday that were disturbing in the extreme. First was a show called My Fake Baby. It was about women who “adopt” dolls that are so freakly real looking that you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference unless you held them. Mind you, these adopters are not 8 year old girls who want a baby to play with but 40 year old women that are doing nothing more than replacing their grown or lost children with these surrogates. They put them in brand new $200 car seats and pushed them around in strollers as though they were the real thing. Although never explicitly said one woman was replacing her dead child with one of these bastardizations.
These are not your mother’s porcelain faced collectible dolls but fleshy real feeling replicants who come with an optional breathing upgrade.
There is something so fundamentally sad and wrong about this it’s hard to really pick on these women. Maybe the money spent on these doppelgangers would be better served paying for a few visits to the old psychiatrist.
The next show was even better… or worse…or freakier…or maybe if Match.com isn’t working for you, educational. It was all about Brothers and sisters who fall in love with each other and not letting the law, nature or the fear of producing a mutant stop them, acted on their blissful new found passion. These were not situations of unaware siblings falling into relationships ignorant of their familial status but people who for whatever reason were separated at young ages and then actively found each other as adults. I am sure we can all understand how a situation such as this would progress from a natural and wonderful sibling bond into them screwing each other.
A German couple described on the show actually had four children. Two of them had 15 toes, three heads and spoke in tongues. Okay, that’s a bit of an exaggeration but they did have physical and mental defects. Luckily the German parliament decided that the glories of sibling love was and should stay illegal. The guy in question was imprisoned and his children were taken away although I can’t comprehend why the wife/sister/demon-seed-mother was not sent to the pokey as well. It’s nice to know that Alabama-style love is alive and well throughout the world and offers a great alternative for all those people whose only way to get laid is to fornicate with their kinfolk.
